SKILLS WORKSHOP
The new larger PCTs, with their colleagues in Practice Based Commissioning organisations, are at the heart of the commissioning processes vital to the delivery of service modernisation.
They are challenged with delivering an agenda of high impact changes, the commissioning of primary care services for the first time in the history of the NHS, the reduction of unplanned care admissions, and achieving a shift from secondary to primary care in the management of long term and other conditions. All of this will take place within a context of expanded plurality of supply, and contracting complexity.
At a time when commissioning is at the heart of the NHS, it has never been more important to support professionals to develop their commissioning skills.
A Professional Development Programme
The programme is offered in two ways:
• This programme is offered as a bespoke programme for organisations, as a PCT focussed route or a Practice Based Commissioning focussed route. As a bespoke programme for a PCT or a PBC cluster, you nominate the group or set for the programme, and we work with you to tailor the programme specifically to local needs and issues.
• In addition, we offer the programme twice yearly to individuals, the next programme commences in Sepember 2006 for PBC professionals. To request a brochure for the Sepember programme please complete the on line response form at the end of the section, or contact 0151 709 0012
This is a unique professional development opportunity for commissioning professionals, focussing on the following skill areas:
Action Learning
Action Learning provides an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge within the context of action upon a real situation or problem in the work place.
The technique was pioneered and researched by Professor R Revans, and is consistent with the evidence base on effective adult learning methods.
An illustrative outline is given below, based on eight one day sessions, conducted two or three weeks apart. Learning sets will contain a maximum of 12 participants. Each day will be planned with participants in advance, to meet their own priorities – with expert inputs, learning resource packs and e-learning, and facilitated by skilled set-leaders.
At the centre of the programme there will be the opportunity for each participant to bring a problem or change issue important to their local commissioning strategy.
The individual will work on this issue for the duration of the programme, drawing upon the resources of the group – facilitators, participants, experts, learning materials – to work on a solution and actions. The actions taken as a result will benefit the organisation as well as the individual, and will be written up by the participant as an outcome of the programme.
Days will be structured to allow the development of learning and skills outcomes in key skills areas, while building in time to work on the nominated issues.
Action Learning is a tried and tested method of management and organisation development. The process involves people working in small groups, tackling important organisational issues or problems and learning from their attempts to change things.
Perhaps the easiest way to think about Action Learning is to see it as consisting of four interactive elements
