Speaker biographies: Bob Ricketts ![]() Bob is Director of System Management & New Enterprise (from September 2007) in the Commissioning & System Management Directorate. Previous roles include: • Director of Demand-Side Reform (from February 2006), leading the development of national policy on all aspects of demand-side reform (including Choice, Commissioning, Practice Based Commissioning and Demand Management) • Head of Access Policy Development & Capacity at the Department of Health (from December 2003), leading national policy development on access, choice of elective care, plurality of provision, and capacity planning. Previously Head of Capacity, Plurality & Choice at the Department of Health (April 2002 - December 2003), leading the development of NHS and IS Treatment Centres, choice of elective care and capacity planning • Regional Director of Performance (1992-2002) for South East Region, Anglia & Oxford and East Anglia • District General Manager, West Norfolk & Wisbech Health Authority (1990-1992) Mike Farrar CBE Chief Executive: ![]() Mike Farrar was appointed as Chief Executive of NHS North West, the Strategic Health Authority for the northwest of England in May 2006. Previous to this, he had been Chief Executive of West Yorkshire SHA and of South Yorkshire SHA before that. Other previous posts include Chief Executive of Tees Health Authority and Head of Primary Care at the Department of Health. At the Department of Health, Mike was responsible for establishing primary care groups, primary care trusts and Personal Medical Services (PMS). Mike chaired the Strategic Health Authority Chief Executives' Group from its inception to 2009, was the National Programme Director of NHS Live and is a board member of York Health Economics Consortium. In addition, Mike leads the work on International Benchmarking of Quality for the National Quality Board and sits on the National Migration Impacts Forum. He is also a Board member of Sport England, having served for 14 months as its interim Chair in 2007-2009. Resultant of Mike’s connections with this arena he was appointed as NHS Sport, Physical Activity and Health Champion in August 2009. Prior to working in the NHS, Mike worked for Grand Metropolitan UK Ltd and pursued early sporting aspirations, playing cricket for Lancashire’s second eleven and semi-professional football for Altrincham and Rochdale.
